Picks in waiting. These look like calls we'd make, but their credentials run through a registry we haven't finished pulling directly, and nothing gets a stamp here secondhand:
  • CUT artisan. hair. design. (Flemington) — Downtown Flemington, artisan/color specialty with a real staffed team and ongoing ARROJO NYC training — good pick for color/design work, but verify the 'top rated' claim yourself since no third-party score backs it up.
  • AM Salon (Flemington) — Repeat local award for extensions specifically plus verifiable sustainability certification — worth calling for extensions/color work.
  • The Cutting Edge (Flemington) — Longest documented track record in the category (30+ years, Redken Premier status) — safest first call for anyone who wants an established shop over a new one.
  • Front Row Barber (Clinton) — Consistently strong scores across multiple independent platforms (Google 4.7/259, Chamber 4.8/233) — the most-reviewed barber shop found in-county.
  • Zanya Spa Salon (Lambertville) — Highest review volume found in the whole category (362 on Birdeye) with a strong 4.8 score, plus 20+ years of track record — best pick for anyone wanting a full spa-salon experience and willing to pay for it.

Why trust this page

We pull credentials from the official registries ourselves and print the date next to every status — hair salons and barbershops in New Jersey are regulated by the NJ State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling (under the Division of Consumer Affairs). Shops need a business-level shop registration; individual stylists/barbers need their own cosmetologist, hairstylist, or barber license. Verify both at the state lookup: https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/ (use "Business Search" for the shop, "Person Search" for an individual stylist). General Division of Consumer Affairs line: 973-504-6400; Board of Cosmetology contact details at njconsumeraffairs.gov/cos.. Picks are editorial judgment on the checkable record: years in the trade, complaint patterns, review consistency, real presence in the county. No company paid to be listed, none can pay to become a pick, and when a pick has a weak spot we print it. Here are the full rules.

Every salon we checked

The category is genuinely well-supplied inside Hunterdon County — Flemington alone has at least five distinct standalone hair businesses (CUT artisan, AM Salon, The Cutting Edge, Hunterdon Haircutters, Halo Salon), plus real shops in Clinton, Lambertville, Frenchtown, Whitehouse Station, and Milford. This is not a thin category needing adjacent-county padding. It is, however, infested with lead-gen/directory noise — Yellow Pages, Superpages, Vagaro, Booksy, and Mindbody all surface generic listing pages for the same towns with no independent editorial value, and several "salons" only exist as booking-platform profiles (GlossGenius, Squire) with no verifiable street presence; those were excluded from the table above unless a real address and independent site were confirmed.

Registry status comes straight from the state's verification system on the date shown, and you can rerun any number there yourself in about two minutes. Review scores are what the named platforms report and we have not audited them. BBB grades as of July 2026. "Based in" is the registered address city, which sometimes differs from where a company says it operates. An active registration is the floor, not an endorsement; the picks we would actually call are above.

What it costs

No credible, sourced NJ-specific pricing data for haircuts/color was found in this pass worth citing — omitting rather than guessing. Each shop's own posted price list (CUT artisan, AM Salon, Cutting Edge all publish menus) is the more reliable per-provider source; link to those rather than publish a stale county-wide estimate.

Before you hire

  1. Ask whether your specific stylist (not just the shop) is individually licensed — NJ licenses cosmetologists, hairstylists, and barbers as individuals in addition to the shop's business registration; a licensed shop can still employ an unlicensed apprentice cutting hair unsupervised.
  2. For color and chemical services (keratin, perms, bleach/balayage), ask what brand system they use and whether they patch-test — allergic reactions and chemical burns are the most common salon complaints, and a shop that skips patch tests on request is a signal to walk.
  3. Confirm cash-only or card policies and cancellation/no-show fees before booking — several Hunterdon shops (e.g., Hunterdon Haircutters) are cash-only, which trips up first-time visitors.
  4. For barbershops offering straight-razor shaves, ask about their sanitation protocol between clients (disposable blades, autoclave/barbicide for tools) — this is the specific failure mode that leads to health department complaints in barbering.
  5. Treat 'best of' badges (Best of Hunterdon County, reader's choice polls) as popularity marketing, not quality verification — cross-check with an independent review platform (Google, Yelp, Birdeye) before treating the badge as proof.

Questions neighbors actually ask

Do NJ hair salons and barbershops need to be licensed?

Yes. New Jersey requires both a shop-level registration and individual licenses for the cosmetologists, hairstylists, or barbers working there, all issued by the NJ State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. You can check a business or a specific stylist's license status yourself at newjersey.mylicense.com.

What's the difference between a 'cosmetologist' and a 'hairstylist' license in NJ, and does it matter for a basic haircut?

A cosmetologist license covers hair, skin, and nails and requires more training hours; a hairstylist license is hair-only. Both are legal to give you a haircut or color. For a basic cut it doesn't matter which license your stylist holds — it matters more for combined services like a cut-and-facial visit, where only a cosmetologist is qualified for the skin work.

Why do review counts for the same shop look so different across sites (like Front Row Barber showing 259 on Google but 1,081 on Squire)?

Different platforms count different things. Google and Yelp only count written reviews left by customers. Booking platforms like Squire often count every completed appointment as a rating data point, even without a written review, which inflates the number. When comparing shops, stick to one platform at a time rather than mixing counts.
