Why trust this page

We pull credentials from the official registries ourselves and print the date next to every status — nJ requires anyone performing home repair/improvement work for compensation — including handymen — to register as a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. License numbers follow the format 13VH#######00. Verify status at the state's Home Improvement Contractor Search: https://hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov/ (or the general license lookup at https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/). Registration does not cover licensed-trade work (electrical, plumbing beyond minor fixes) — that requires the separately licensed trade.. Picks are editorial judgment on the checkable record: years in the trade, complaint patterns, review consistency, real presence in the county. No company paid to be listed, none can pay to become a pick, and when a pick has a weak spot we print it. Here are the full rules.

Every handyman we checked

Handyman coverage in Hunterdon County is real but thin at the top end: most of the county's day-to-day fix-it work runs through a handful of small, owner-operator shops (Prestige, Honey Done, Hunterdon Handyman, Precision) plus two mid-size local firms with real track records — Handyman LLC in Whitehouse Station (est. 1988) and Handyman On Call in Annandale (est. 2016, part of a 30-year-old parent contractor). One national franchise, Mr. Handyman, has a Lebanon storefront. Several small operators publish no license number at all, which is the exact gap NJ's Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) rule is meant to close — a large share of the "handyman near me" search results statewide are unlicensed side operations, and Hunterdon is no exception. Independent review volume outside Angi/HomeAdvisor/BBB is generally thin for this category (most shops have single digits to low dozens of reviews), so treat any one review count as a small sample.

Registry status comes straight from the state's verification system on the date shown, and you can rerun any number there yourself in about two minutes. Review scores are what the named platforms report and we have not audited them. BBB grades as of July 2026. "Based in" is the registered address city, which sometimes differs from where a company says it operates. An active registration is the floor, not an endorsement; the picks we would actually call are above.

What it costs

National average handyman rates run $50-150/hour depending on whether you're hiring an independent operator ($50-80/hr) or a franchise/corporate outfit ($75-125/hr), per Angi's 2026 cost guide. A nearby NJ data point (Jersey City) shows $50-100/hour as the local range. We did not find a Hunterdon-specific rate survey — treat these as regional ballparks, not quotes, and always get a written estimate for the actual job.

Before you hire

  1. Ask for the NJ Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration number by name and check it yourself at hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov before any money changes hands — handymen are covered by this rule in NJ even for small jobs, and a real share of local operators skip it.
  2. Get the total job price or hourly rate in writing before work starts — handyman jobs are notorious for scope creep once a wall is opened up; a written estimate is your only leverage if the final bill balloons.
  3. Confirm liability insurance directly (ask for a certificate, don't just take their word) — a handyman working on a ladder or near electrical/plumbing without coverage puts the liability on you if something goes wrong in your home.
  4. Separate licensed-trade work from general handyman work: electrical and plumbing beyond minor fixture swaps legally require a licensed electrician or plumber in NJ, not just an HIC-registered handyman — ask who's actually doing that portion of the job.
  5. For anything over a few hundred dollars, get a start and finish date in writing — small handyman outfits often juggle several jobs at once, and an open-ended timeline is the most common source of homeowner frustration in this category.

Questions neighbors actually ask

Do handymen in New Jersey actually need to be licensed?

Yes. New Jersey doesn't have a separate 'handyman license,' but anyone doing home repair or improvement work for pay — including handymen — has to register as a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) with the state Division of Consumer Affairs. That registration is what shows up as a number starting with 13VH. It's not optional, but plenty of small operators skip it, so ask for the number and check it yourself rather than assuming.

Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work in my house?

Only minor, non-structural fixes — swapping a light fixture or a faucet, that kind of thing. Anything involving new circuits, panel work, gas lines, or rerouted plumbing legally requires a licensed electrician or plumber, not a general handyman. If a handyman offers to do that work themselves without bringing in a licensed trade, that's a red flag.

Why do handyman review counts look so much lower than for bigger contractors?

It's a real pattern, not a data gap on our end — most Hunterdon handyman jobs are small, one-off tasks, and homeowners are far less likely to leave a review for a two-hour repair than for a $20,000 kitchen remodel. A shop with 15-20 reviews and no complaints can be perfectly solid; just weigh a small sample size accordingly and ask for a couple of direct references if the job is bigger than routine.
