Why trust this page

We pull credentials from the official registries ourselves and print the date next to every status — plain lawn mowing, fertilizing, and cleanup work is unlicensed in New Jersey. Once a job becomes construction — patios, walkways, retaining walls, drainage, other hardscaping — the contractor must hold an active NJ Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration, format 13VH#######, issued by the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. Verify status free at https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/ (select 'Home Improvement Contractor'). Companies applying pesticides/herbicides (weed-and-feed lawn programs, grub control) need a separate NJDEP Pesticide Business Registration/applicator license, not covered by the HIC — ask for it separately. Snow plowing itself carries no state license requirement in NJ.. Picks are editorial judgment on the checkable record: years in the trade, complaint patterns, review consistency, real presence in the county. No company paid to be listed, none can pay to become a pick, and when a pick has a weak spot we print it. Here are the full rules.

Every landscaper we checked

Hunterdon has real depth in lawn/landscaping — this is one of the few trades where you don't have to reach into neighboring counties. Flemington, Clinton, and the Route 22/78 corridor (Whitehouse Station, Hampton, Glen Gardner) each have multiple long-tenured, family-owned operators (10-40 years in business), several BBB-accredited with A+ ratings. Snow plowing is a natural add-on for most of these same crews rather than a separate specialty. The category is not obviously infested with templated lead-gen shells the way some trades are, though national aggregator sites (LawnStarter, Angi, HomeAdvisor) dominate the first page of search results and route leads to whoever's paying, so a homeowner searching casually is more likely to land on a marketplace than a direct local company. Watch for hardscaping work in particular — that's the piece that requires HIC registration and is where the one documented complaint pattern in this batch (Ryback's paver patio issue) showed up; plain mowing/fertilization has a lower bar and correspondingly thinner verification trail.

Registry status comes straight from the state's verification system on the date shown, and you can rerun any number there yourself in about two minutes. Review scores are what the named platforms report and we have not audited them. BBB grades as of July 2026. "Based in" is the registered address city, which sometimes differs from where a company says it operates. An active registration is the floor, not an endorsement; the picks we would actually call are above.

What it costs

No credible NJ- or Hunterdon-specific pricing source was found during this research pass, so no cost figures are included. National lawn-care marketplace sites (LawnStarter, Angi) publish price ranges, but those are aggregator marketing figures rather than independently verified local data — cite them as provisional if used elsewhere, don't present as fact.

Before you hire

  1. Ask whether the job is 'maintenance' (mowing, fertilizing, cleanups) or 'hardscape' (patios, walls, walkways, drainage) — only hardscape legally requires the NJ Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration; a crew can mow your lawn with zero state license.
  2. For any patio, retaining wall, or walkway quote, get the 13VH HIC number in writing and check it's Active at newjersey.mylicense.com before signing or paying a deposit — an expired or missing number is grounds to walk.
  3. If they're spraying anything (weed control, grub treatment, fertilizer with pesticide), ask for their NJDEP pesticide applicator license — that's a separate registration from the HIC and easy to skip past in a sales pitch.
  4. Get snow plowing terms in writing before the season, not after the first storm: per-push price vs. seasonal contract, trigger depth (how many inches before they show up), and whether driveway apron/mailbox damage is covered — this is the single most common landscaping-adjacent complaint nationally.
  5. For anything involving a paver rebuild or retaining wall, ask to see a 2+ year-old job, not just last month's — base prep failures (settling, heaving) usually don't show up until a full freeze-thaw cycle or two, which is exactly the failure pattern one provider in this list has a documented complaint about.

Questions neighbors actually ask

Do I need to check a license just to get my lawn mowed?

No. Routine mowing, fertilizing, and cleanups aren't licensed trades in New Jersey. The license requirement (HIC registration, prefix 13VH) only kicks in once the job becomes 'home improvement' — patios, retaining walls, walkways, drainage systems, that kind of permanent construction work.

What's a fair price for basic lawn mowing in Hunterdon County?

We didn't find a credible NJ-specific or Hunterdon-specific price study to cite here, so we're not going to guess a number — national mowing-price aggregators exist but their figures are marketing copy from lead-gen sites, not independently verified data. Get three local quotes; prices vary a lot by lot size and whether it's a one-time cut or a season contract.

Is the same company that mows my lawn allowed to also plow my driveway in winter?

Yes — there's no separate license for snow plowing in NJ, and most local landscaping companies run it as a winter add-on to their summer maintenance business. The thing to nail down isn't licensing, it's the contract terms: trigger depth, per-push vs. seasonal pricing, and damage liability.

One license checked every Thursday.
